If you have ventured off into a backyard barnyard or just bought a home where you have room for animals, in particular goats, are you familiar with some do’s and don’ts for feeding? How about a question for the ages, “can I feed my goats apples”?
When you take on the responsibility of raising animals and in this case goats it’s important to learn what is good for them to eat and what is not. Even the most common of things like apples can be okay for some animals and not for others. Can goats eat apples?
Goats and Apples
Goats are voracious eaters. They can eat apples however the seeds are not good for them. They would have to eat a pretty sizeable amount of seeds to be harmful. If you’re going to feed them apples as a treat, then it would be advisable to core the apple before you feed it to your stock.
Should you have apple trees and the goats eat the fallen apples don’t worry. Like we said the seeds are not good for them but they would have to eat a lot before it made them sick. Seeds are like grain if you feed too much it will bloat the stomach and make them sick.
When feeding animals that are new to you. Be sure you learn what they would eat in a natural habitat. Just because your goat will eat a hamburger does not mean it’s good for them or natural. Feed should be what they would encounter in the wild. For example letting them loose in a flower garden can be dangerous. Many flowering plants are very poisonous to goats.
Most animals have a natural instinct to what is good for them and what is not. Make sure that you have plenty of natural food sources available for foraging.
Can Goats Eat Apples?
Apples should be given as a treat and not part of a daily feed plan. If your goat does not like the apple, this to can be a natural reaction, just like household pets farm animals can be finicky about food. Never over encourage an animal to eat something they simply don’t want.
You can offer it to them more than ounce but if they don’t want it they simply will not take it. When eating apples goats may keep eating if offered, they tend to be piggy about food. Even if they keep asking, nudging or otherwise persuading you for more, don’t just keep feeding. Offer a few treats and move on.
Goats will not stop eating even if they’re full. You can easily overfeed and make them sick. Animal’s intestines are not like humans. Stomach issues, colic, for example, can be fatal. Moderation is the key to a happy goat. A few slices and move along.
A good rule-of-thumb is what they would eat in their natural habitat, keep it in moderation if it’s a treat and YES if you want to feed your goat an apple and they like it. Then, by all means, give your goats a treat!
